Reflection
Our Community Word for February proclaims: Being renewed in God’s righteousness leads us to know, love, and serve Him. In our Catholic faith, righteousness is not merely about the law, punishment, or moral perfection. At its core, it is God’s faithful and merciful love that restores what is broken. Scripture reveals a God who remains true to His covenant and never abandons His people, even in weakness and sin.
From truly knowing God flows a deeper love – not born of our perfection, but of His grace. This love moves us to serve Him and to witness that His righteousness does not distance us but instead draws us closer to His heart. Renewal bears fruit in a heart that worships God alone. As He restores us, false attachments lose their grip, and our desires are purified. We recognize that only God satisfies, heals, and gives life. This renewal turns us away from subtle idols – power, success, comfort, even our self – and back to our Creator. When His righteousness takes root, worship is no longer divided; it becomes the faithful offering of our whole life to Him.
Thus, the Lord’s command to the community this month: “The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve” (Mt 4:11), ceases to be a mere directive and becomes our natural way of living.
For the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the theme reminds us that we are renewed in God’s righteousness when we live the Beatitudes. In our modern world, living the Beatitudes is deeply challenging because they call for inner conversion and invite us to live counterculturally. While society celebrates self-promotion, comfort, strength, and instant success, Jesus blesses the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, and those who suffer for what is right. Faithfulness to the Beatitudes can feel unnoticed, as their rewards are neither immediate nor visible. Yet we are invited to hold firmly to the Lord’s encouragement this week: “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven” (Mt 5:12).
Our good works and acts of charity allow the light of Christ to break forth through us like the dawn, guiding others toward God. This is the theme of the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time; we are renewed in God’s righteousness when we become the light that leads others to Christ. To carry this light, we must remain close to Jesus through prayer, humility, and obedience. The closer we are to Him, the more brightly His light shines through us. This light is made visible in simple and faithful choices of love, truth, and forgiveness, instead of anger, convenience, and resentment. When our lives reflect the compassion, mercy, and integrity of Jesus, people are led not to admire us but to encounter Him. In this way, we become instruments of God’s promise: “Light shall rise for you in the darkness” (Is 58:10b), inspiring others to move forward with hope and respond to love even in the midst of darkness.
On the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we are reminded that we are renewed in God’s righteousness when we obey His commandments with a sincere heart. True obedience is not rooted in fear or mere “rule-keeping,” but in a love that trusts God’s wisdom. When we obey with a willing heart, our lives begin to reflect a God who is just, merciful, and faithful. Obedience then becomes a response to grace, not a burden imposed from outside, not a restriction of freedom, but a path that leads us closer to God and to true life. As the psalmist assures us, “Blessed are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord” (Ps 119:1). In walking according to God’s law, we discover a quiet joy and a deep peace that come from living in harmony with His will.
The First Sunday of Lent, our theme reminds us that we are renewed in God’s righteousness when we overcome temptation through His Word and sanctifying grace. It marks the beginning of our journey with Christ into the desert, where He triumphed over temptation through fidelity to God’s Word. The renewal in God’s righteousness comes not by our own strength, but by clinging to Scripture and relying on sanctifying grace. Temptation, when surrendered to God, becomes not a trap but an opportunity for growth in holiness and a deeper experience of His saving power. Jesus shows us that victory over the enemy – who tempts us with comfort, power, and pride – comes through faith, obedience, and steadfast trust in God’s promises. Lent, therefore, is a season of renewal: through prayer, fasting, and repentance, we reclaim the divine life within us. Every triumph over temptation restores our dignity as children of God and strengthens us to be a source of life for others. As St. Paul affirms, “through the obedience of the one man…the many will be made righteous” (Rom 5:19b).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, guide us to follow Christ with humility, faithfulness, and love. Help us resist temptation, serve others with compassion, and remain rooted in Your Word. Renew our hearts this Lent, and lead us to deeper conversion, that our lives may reflect Your goodness and bring glory to Your name. now and always. Amen.
